ChatGPT now pulls Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details into its local recommendations. That makes your Yelp page a data source for AI answers about your business, whether or not you manage it.

On July 23, Yelp confirmed a data licensing agreement with OpenAI. Yelp's branding and links appear alongside the information, though OpenAI controls how it's presented. The scale involved is roughly 330 million cumulative reviews and more than 8 million business listings. Financial terms weren't disclosed, and the deal is non-exclusive, which means Yelp is free to sign similar agreements with other AI companies.
Then, three weeks later, it stopped being just about information.
On August 10, Yelp announced that ChatGPT users in the US and Canada can book a restaurant table or join a waitlist through Yelp without leaving the chat. OpenAI added OpenTable and Resy the same day.
So in under a month, ChatGPT went from a place where people ask about local businesses to a place where they book them.
What Yelp Data ChatGPT Actually Uses
Most people hear "reviews deal" and picture star ratings changing hands. It's broader than that.
A Yelp business page holds your hours, your address and phone number, the categories you're listed under, your photos, your price range, and the full text of every review anyone has left. That's the material being licensed.
Which means the details matter as much as the rating. A page listing hours you changed in 2023, or a category describing work you stopped doing, is now feeding answers about your business.
Does Your Business Even Have a Yelp Page?
Not every business does, and not every business needs one.
Yelp's coverage skews hard toward consumer-facing local businesses.
Yelp coverage is strong | Yelp coverage is thin or nonexistent |
|---|---|
Restaurants, bars, cafés | B2B and professional services |
Home services and contractors | Online-only businesses |
Auto repair and dealers | Manufacturers and wholesale |
Beauty and personal care | Home-based consultancies |
Health and medical providers | Businesses with no walk-in traffic |
Local retail and hotels | Anything sold to other companies |
If you're on the left, there is very likely a page for you whether you made it or not. If you're on the right, there may be no page at all, and even if there is, Yelp probably isn't where your customers are looking.
The two ChatGPT integrations announced so far reinforce that. Restaurant Booking is restaurants only. Request a Quote is built for home and local service providers. Yelp is leaning into the categories where it has always been strong.
Here's the thing though. Whether you should invest in Yelp and whether you should check it are two different questions. Checking takes about a minute.
Check either way. Invest only if your customers are actually there.
How to Find and Claim Your Unclaimed Yelp Page
Here's what catches most owners off guard. Yelp builds business pages on its own, from data it collects, whether or not anyone ever claimed them. Those unclaimed pages show up in search results, and anyone can leave a review on them.
So, there may be a page out there right now with information you never entered and reviews you've never read.
Finding out takes about a minute:
Go to biz.yelp.com/claim and search your business name.
If your listing shows as Unclaimed, select the option to claim the free business page.
Create or log into a Yelp account and complete verification. Phone verification is the standard method. Text or email is sometimes offered, but not always.
Once you're verified, you can correct everything on the page.
Claiming is free, and so is everything you can do once you're in. And claiming a page doesn't make you a Yelp advertiser, despite what a lot of business owners assume.
One thing almost nobody knows: Yelp can automatically flip a claimed page back to unclaimed if nobody has logged into the Yelp for Business account in 90 days. So "I claimed it a few years ago" is not the same as "it's claimed." Go look.
Worth knowing too: Yelp doesn't delete business pages on request. You can claim one and mark the business closed, but you can't make the page go away. Managing it is the only real option.
I always recommend to my clients that they claim their free Yelp business page, especially if their customers are using Yelp. Free also means that you will get solicitations to upgrade your free account. Be prepared for multiple calls. Consider it payment for using their site for free.
From Recommendation to Booking: What ChatGPT Can Actually Do Now
ChatGPT has been recommending local businesses for a while. Ask for a good Thai place nearby and you'd get suggestions, usually with hours, a phone number, and a link.
What it couldn't do was finish the job. The recommendation was where ChatGPT's involvement ended, and you clicked out to the restaurant's site or a booking platform to do the rest. Even the agent modes built to click through websites on your behalf tended to stall partway through a booking and hand control back to you.
That changed on August 10, at least for restaurants.
What works today. Ask ChatGPT for a restaurant and, at participating locations in the US and Canada, you can book a table or join the waitlist inside the conversation. ChatGPT collects the party size, date, time, contact details and any special requests, then completes the booking.
With Yelp and OpenTable there's no account needed. ChatGPT asks permission to pass along your name and email, and you can allow it once, allow it going forward, or type the details in yourself. Resy works differently and does require signing in to a Resy account. OpenAI added all three services on August 10.
There's no payment step, so deposits and ticketed dinners aren't part of this. And once the booking exists, ChatGPT is finished. Changes and cancellations go back through Yelp, OpenTable or Resy.
For the business, the customer's name, phone number and email arrive in your reservation platform the way any booking would. This isn't an anonymous lead.
What's coming. Yelp's Request a Quote is headed to ChatGPT as well. That's the feature where a customer describes a job and sends it out to local service providers to bid on. When the partnership was announced on July 23, Yelp said the feature would be added "soon." Neither company has given a date since, and as of this writing it has not launched.
Why "Request a Quote" matters more to most businesses
If you're a plumber, an electrician, a landscaper, a roofer, or a house cleaner, picture this.
Someone tells ChatGPT their water heater is leaking and asks who they should call. ChatGPT names a few local companies. Then, instead of the conversation ending there, the customer sends a quote request without leaving the chat.
You get a lead. That customer never saw your website, never read your About page, never compared your photos against a competitor's. The entire decision happened in a conversation you had no visibility into.
That's the actual shift. Being recommended by AI has been happening for a while now. Being contacted through AI is new, and it removes the step where you normally get to make your case.
One caution
The restaurant booking only works for restaurants using Yelp Guest Manager, which is Yelp's reservation and waitlist software. You are either using that product or you are not in the integration. It isn't something you earn by having a good website or accurate listings.
If Request a Quote works the same way, being included may come down to which Yelp products you use rather than anything you can optimize. Nobody has confirmed that yet, so treat it as a question to watch. And be skeptical of anyone who tells you they can get your business into ChatGPT's quote flow.
Why This Won't Be the Last AI Data Deal
Two details tell you where this goes.
Yelp already licenses its data to Apple Maps, Yahoo, and Alexa, so this isn't new behavior for them. And because the OpenAI agreement is non-exclusive, Yelp can make similar deals with other AI companies. CEO Jeremy Stoppelman has said more partnerships are in the works.
There's a word for what's happening underneath all of this: grounding. It's the moment an AI system stops answering from what it absorbed during training and goes out to check real sources instead. A licensing deal is one company paying to become one of those sources.
The lesson isn't "go pour your energy into Yelp." It's that information about your business, sitting on platforms you may not manage, is being licensed as AI infrastructure. Your job is making sure that information is right wherever it lives.
What to Do This Week
None of this requires a developer, and the whole list is maybe twenty minutes.
Search your business at biz.yelp.com/claim. If a page exists and shows as unclaimed, claim it. If you claimed it years ago, log in and confirm it's still claimed. If nothing comes up, you're done with Yelp and the rest of this list still applies.
Fix your hours, address, phone number and categories. Every platform, not just Yelp.
Look at your photos. If the newest one shows a different location or an old logo, replace it.
Reply to your three most recent reviews. Your replies are public text attached to your business, and they get read by people and machines both.
Do the same audit on your Google Business Profile while the tab is open.
You don't control how any AI system presents your business. You control the information underneath it, and right now that information is worth more than it was a month ago.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every business need a Yelp page?
No. Yelp coverage is strongest for consumer-facing local businesses like restaurants, home services, auto repair, beauty, and health providers. B2B firms, online-only businesses, and home-based consultancies often have no Yelp presence and don't need one. It's still worth checking whether an unclaimed page exists, since an inaccurate one can surface and collect reviews whether you manage it or not.
Can ChatGPT see my Yelp reviews?
Yes. As of July 23, 2026, OpenAI licenses Yelp's reviews, ratings, photos and business information for use in ChatGPT. When Yelp content appears in an answer, it carries Yelp branding and links back to the platform.
Do I need to claim my Yelp page for ChatGPT to find my business?
No. Unclaimed pages are part of Yelp's data whether you've claimed them or not. But claiming is how you correct what's on the page. If your unclaimed listing has the wrong hours or an old phone number, that's the information being licensed.
Is it free to claim a Yelp business page?
Yes. Claiming is free, and it does not make you a Yelp advertiser. Claiming gives you free tools to update your business information, respond to reviews, and reply to quote requests. Advertising is a separate paid product.
Can I get my Yelp page deleted?
No. Yelp does not remove business pages on request. You can claim a page and mark the business as closed, but the page itself stays. Claiming and managing it is the only way to control what it says.
When will Request a Quote launch in ChatGPT?
No date has been announced. Yelp said the feature would be added "soon" when the OpenAI partnership was announced on July 23, 2026, and neither company has given a timeline since. Restaurant reservations launched August 10, so the action layer is clearly being built out, but Request a Quote for service businesses is not live yet.
Can ChatGPT users book with my business directly?
For restaurants, yes as of August 10, 2026, through Yelp Reservations and Waitlist in the US and Canada. The booking lands in your reservation platform with the customer's name, phone number and email, the same as any other reservation. Participation depends on using Yelp Guest Manager. Yelp's Request a Quote feature for service businesses has been announced but has not launched yet.
Does this mean Yelp matters more than Google now?
No. Google Business Profile is still where most local search volume lives. What changed is that Yelp data now feeds AI answers too, so accuracy on both matters rather than picking one.
